What is Jan Aushadhi?

The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) aims to cut out-of-pocket healthcare costs by giving every Indian access to affordable, high-quality generic medicines. Revamped in 2015, the scheme uses bioequivalent generics that match branded drugs in therapeutic value but cost far less due to minimal R&D and marketing expenses. Despite its promise, PMBJP still struggles to gain strong traction in the pharmaceutical ecosystem. Awareness, perception gaps, and weak user trust have slowed its growth. Our goal is to bridge this gap and build confidence around the scheme's products and services.

Design Process

We used the double-diamond method to form a structured design workflow that helped us discover Jan Aushadhi, define what mattered, develop ideas and turn them into the final design.

Secondary Research

Desk Study was done to understand the present status of the scheme and its adoption throughout different regions in India.

Over 87% of medicines sold are branded medicines, proving the adoption of generic medicines is low.

Approximately 63% to 65% of all deaths in India are accounted by non-communicable diseases. That's nearly 2 out of every 3 deaths in the country.

Primary Research

Primary research helped us understand the working of the system and the gaps in them through the perspective of people who has first hand experience with the system.

Flow Model

We drew a flow model from the data we gathered from our pilot study which included a wide variety of stakeholders to determine the coordination and communication between them.

Cultural Model

The cultural model helped us understand the factors which influences the patient/buyer while deciding to buy medicines.

Sequence Model

The sequence model helped us focus on the order of activities, triggers for certain tasks, and potential breakdowns in the process of buying medicines from Jan Aushadhi.

Despite Jan Aushadhi's cost advantages, widespread adoption is hindered by systemic mistrust and supply chain instability. Patients and doctors often equate low prices with inferior quality, while inconsistent digital tools and frequent stock-outs cause frustration. These hurdles, compounded by social biases, force users into a cautious, skeptical journey.
